Shear and Mongo Planetary Profiles

*EVOLVE belongs to Turtlerock Studios.
**Have fun.
***Also, here's some stories to help flesh out the setting. You're welcome.

Name: Shear
Status: Colony, Predominantly Jungle based Environment (although the other biomes of this planet are: Deserts, Tundras, and highly Acidic swamps. Also, fog is a very common thing on this planet), Monster foothold

Insert witty comment here.
Evolution can lead to some interesting things. On Earth, it lead to the development of the sapient species known as Homo sapiens sapiens, which quickly became use to the idea of being the dominant species on the planet. Wanting to exert this dominance to the skies above, mankind spread throughout the cosmos on vast ships, establishing colonies on alien planets, or terra-forming worlds in order to do such.

Recently, a colony was formed on the planet known as Shear, a predominantly-jungle world in the Far Arm of the Milky Way. The planet was home to great loads of natural resources, an atmosphere that was actually breathable and plenty of animals- some even tamable (this quickly became the planets best export)! And for a time, as colonists established Dams, Mines and Buildings, life prospered.

There was peace.

Stage 3 monsters, each standing around 40-50 feet and having fully locked out abilities.
BE AFRAID.
As mankind began making a true presence on the surface of the world however, creatures that can only be described as "Monsters" emerged from the wilderness. With a cunning intelligence unlike anything encountered before, sheer strength, and a frighteningly high rate of reproduction, they were able to overwhelm the local colonial forces with ease.

And these creatures were not friendly nor was Shear the only planet they'd been encountered upon- Factor (a rather prosperous colony before it got fucked over) and many other worlds in the Far Arm of the galaxy had been attacked by these creatures, killing everything in their path. The most terrifying aspect of this was that they evolved from what they ate- a Goliath could eat a heavily armored animal, find a secluded spot, become a large pulsing cocoon, make a few more traits powerful, and emerge a few moments later bigger, stronger, nastier and now with an even more armored hide.

Deciding to stop this threat now, the Director of Counter-Intelligence Group 9 (Or the company that 'owns' Shear, NORDITA- It's a bit unclear and perhaps its from the actions of both) was able to bring the infamous Planet Tamer William Cabot, out of retirement and make him assign groups of Planet Tamers to the planet. Planet Tamers', otherwise known as Hunters, are Big Game Hunters, Former Soldiers, Bounty Hunters- just the generally 'unsavory' individuals of society, and act as mercenaries of a sort. They're job is simplicity itself: "sign on, deplete the local wildlife population, declare the colony 'tamed,' and move on.""

Yay, cutscenes! And here's the same things from the monsters' perspective.
It's not pretty.

Of course, this job is a lot more important. Because these aren't normal animals, and if this planet isn't tamed than these Monsters could continue their horrifying invasion and destroy more colonies- and reach Earth in a massive swarm.

It's time to go huntin'!

Third Party Factions: 2

Planet Tamers/EbonStar
'Veterans, Psychopaths, Professionals and Expendables'
Hunters are not the kind of people you call when a couple of rats are in your basement. Hunters are the kind of people you call when those rats are swarming like piranhas and spread a disease that makes you zombies. They were called in when the soldiers of Ebonstar (a Mercenary company) were unable to effectivley hold back the Monsters- not too surprising, as they never expected a threat like mini-Kaiju. They'd been prepared for pirates to appear and than be blasted down by Anti-Orbital weaponry.

The forces of Ebonstar number around 800-1500, and the Hunters (who have access to things a lot better than what Ebonstar has and more illegal to boot) list in the smaller numbers of  16 (although that number is rising, as Cabot is willing to let anyone join, so long as they're good with a gun). The difference between Ebonstar and the Hunters can be summed as this:

Here is an Ebonstar soldier:
Let's call him Bill. Say hi, Bill!
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
He's a bit busy getting eaten- erm, I mean, fighting a Wraith to here us right now.
Let's say he represents 50 Ebonstar soldiers, with typical Ebonstar equipment and tactics- which, by the way, is nothing to laugh at and is the kind of weaponry that would quite easily defeat a conventional army. Now, here's what these same soldiers look like after encountering Monsters:
I kid, because the Monster wouldn't leave scraps like that!
On the other hand, here's how the Hunters (who field in a four person squad of Assault, Trapper, Support and Medic) are like before and after:

insert cool looking picture of the other Hunters here
You can see why Ebonstar soldiers are joining up with the Hunters- these guys can fight Monsters, and win.

It helps that for every engagement, the Hunters fall from a dropship and have access to energy shields (damn good ones, at that, as they can survive a battering from an angry Goliath for a while) and jetpacks, as well as previously mentioned state of the art and illegal equipment.

I have the feeling Cabot and co. would get along perfectly with Raynor's group.

... I'm bad at subltely, aren't I?

Monsters

The Monsters are an alien race, very similar to the Zerg, specifically the Primal Zerg, what with their tendency to Evolve. Also like the Zerg is that they refuse to let anything but themselves be on a planet, and despise technology to a ridiculous level. If they see any signs of civilization, they will destroy it.

The Monsters also have a frighteningly high reproduction rate, with these creatures spawning from an egg (or eggs) larger than a man, which holds a couple of dozens of larvae roughly about 3 feet in length. These larvae quickly mature into one of the Four different kinds of Monsters (Yes, I'm counting the Behemoth).

At least, it might be four. We still don't know what the fuck is laying those eggs...

Anyways, the only respite humanity has is that they (usually) only ever attack in numbers of one or similarly small (until things really go bad) and that they aren't unstoppable- just really, really fast, smart, adaptable and hard to kill.

...

The Hunters should have really brought some hovertanks with 'em.

Anyways, the four different kinds of monsters are the Goliath (Basically, miniature Godzilla), Wraith (A Feminine and Manipulative monster), Kraken (Electric Octopus Dragon) and the Behemoth (Rock monster Frog). We'll go more in-depth of those creatures in the 'Important Individuals' list.

Anyways, Monsters are especially fearsome with their previously mentioned abilities of evolution. For example, here's a Megamouth, a carnivorous giant frog-like creature.

Incredibly hyped up game, with countless videos already on YouTube
Still get shit quality images

Well, at least this pic is better
And here's a Goliath with our fine test dummy, Markov Golushko!

"Vhen I said I vanted a hot bath, DIS IS NOT WHAT I MEANT!"
Christ, that was a terrible attempt at writing out a Russian accent.
Now as you can see, that Goliath is breathing fire, because Fuck you, that's why. Now, as you can imagine, doing this task isn't exactly easy for the Goliath- well, okay, not entriely true. Breathing out fire? That's just heavy breathing for a Goliath! But, to make its' breath combustible is a tricky business, and it takes time for the Goliath to do this again- if it didn't, its' throat would melt away! And that would be just terrible onii-chan!

Now though, the Goliath see's that pesky Megamouth chomping down on Markov and throwing him about. The Goliath will, naturally, go over and throw a giant rock at both of them. The Megamouth dead, the Goliath will chomp away at its' corpse and go away to evolve into the second stage- and because of that Megamouth, the Goliath can now doesn't have to wait as long to perform those terrifying abilities. In fact, any monster could eat a Megamouth and get that same perk- cooldown on abilities.

You see what I mean? When they eat a creature, the DNA goes to make their already present abilities better! Hormones and Pheromones to reduce cooldown, Natural armor plating, how fast it will take to climb up a wall- all of these abilities hiding inside of various animals.

Another perk is that, supposedly, these monsters learn from what they eat. They've been eating quite a few colonists by now, and they seem to have a rather unsettling knowledge of the defenses of these colonies...

So yeah, fear the monsters, and get a goddamn big gun. You'll need it.

Important Individuals

Hunters

William Cabot (Support)
"Yeah, we're all shit-hot hunters, so what? Cabot's the one that's gonna get us out of here alive." - Abe
He is not only the owner of the dropship, he's the captain of the team. These heroes all work for him. He's the best planet tamer the Arm has ever seen, having made the elite Leading Edge- the greatest force of Planet Tamers/Mercenaries ever seen before retiring. NORDITA brought him out of retirement (he retired because his job led to his family moving far away from civilization- his daughter (or maybe it was his wife) got an intestinal parasite, and due to their relative isolationism and a misdiagnosis from a AutoDoc, she died an agonizing and painful death.Yeah, he has issues.) specially for Shear. A lot of these guys only signed up because it was William Cabot asking. Griffin in particular.

Only one man could lead the desperate attempt to rescue the last of the remaining colonists from Shear: William Cabot. Long retired from planet taming but offered the chance to save millions of lives and get billions of dollars, Cabot agreed to help and, with his robot partner Bucket, assembled the greatest team of Hunters in history- and he's still looking for more people to join up.

Cabot's loadout includes a Rail Cannon (capable of piercing through solid rock), and a communicator that can tag the droship Laure-Ann to drop radioactive dust. He also has a device that can increase the destructive yield of others weaponry, and a cloaking field like all Support Hunters.

Abe (Trapper)
"You fucked with the wrong motherfucker, motherfucker!" - Abe
Abe is a trapper, and no, he doesn't have some exotic pet helping him track prey, nor is he a grizzled vet that’s eager for his next big hunt. He’s just really tricky. Abe’s a former bounty hunter – a smuggler, a thief and potentially the sneakiest Hunter of the bunch.

He has a joking, flirtatious personality, with a tendency towards good-natured ribbing aimed at his fellow hunters, and he's expressed affection for both Caira and Val, though some of it might just be him joking around.

Maybe. Oh, he also has a short story.

Abe's weaponry is simple: A shotgun that changes shape depending on how you fire (squeeze that trigger as fast as you can and you’ll have close range pellets flying scattershot, slow, methodical trigger pulls, you get slightly more accuracy at a longer range) and a Tracking Dart pistol, as well as the obvious Stasis Field like any other Trapper.

Aleksey Markov (Assault)
Warrior extraordinaire
We all have dreams. For the Martian named Markov, that dream just happens to be dying in glorious battle- how he got this dream when his former job was a welder is anyone's guess (although I'm going out on a limb here and guessing those cybernetics have something to do with it). This explains his desire to go toe-to-toe with giant Monsters and get pummeled by them. But sadly, with his deadly arsenal consisting of a Chain-Lighting gun, powerful Assault Rifle, Arc Mines and an impenetrable Personal Shield means that dream may never come true – and that’s just fine with his fellow Hunters, and sad for Aleksey.

Also, Abe doesn't like him.

Bucket (Support)
"What happens to you when we're all dead?"
"I don't like to think about it."
Bucket, or Rank-Rajat Mind Serial Number 1Z27FHV047FBPQ40 is a curious little machine, being the only member of this ragtag band of Hunters to not be human (As modified as he is, Slim is still technically human), but instead an artificial intelligence (Rank Rajat, to be specific... That's apparently big) made on Earth, before properly 'waking up' on Ganymede.
No clue why the largest moon of Jupiter is such a recurring locale in Evolve, by the way. It's important, but we don't know why.
Yet.
He worked with Cabot for a time after he'd retired from the whole 'Hunter' business, acting with him as a Marshall until Cabot was brought back into duty for Shear, and assisted in forming the present team. He also pilots the EbonStar and dropships, and his mech body is simply another tool he can utilize. Bucket has a few tricks up his 'sleeve', including the ability to make his head into a miniature UAV Drone (at the expense of not able to move), a laser-guided missile launcher and the ability to bring down numerous sentry drones to assist him in combat (5 at a time). He also has a cloaking field, as expected.

Also, he loves watching humans (or as he jokingly calls them, monkeys) walking into the large carnivorous plants on Shear- they're Venus flytraps to terrifying extremes.

Caira Diaz (Medic)
"She's smart. She's funny. I like her. Don't tell her I said that."- Abe
The smartest person on the team and the only hunter from Earth, Caira Diaz is also the only person on Shear with any hope of figuring out what the Monsters are, where they come from, and what they want. Given enough time, everyone believes she’ll find the answers. But there are were only five days until the last evac-ship left, and she would have spent most of that time hunting Monsters. Thankfully due to the Portal Master putting a damper on that, she now has plenty of more time to figure out what the fuck is going on.

One can only imagine the confusion at the weapons lab when Caira put in her order for a Grenade Launcher that shoots both Napalm and Healing rounds. As a qualified combat medic, she thoroughly enjoys both saving lives and setting stuff on fire. Her Adrenaline Field (exactly what it sounds like) is also the perfect pick-me up for an all-night hunt.

She has a short story.

Crow (Trapper)
The true hunter out of all these Hunters.
Crow is a bit of a recluse. He actually retired to the unsettled parts of Shear (he was a member of the Survey Corps that found Shear) to be left alone... Until the monsters arrived, with his first encountering being encountering a wounded Goliath and tracking it through the jungle, and also found Slim int hose jungles, where the two became good(?) friends. He understands the planet better than most, which makes him perfectly suited as a Trapper. Now, Crow and his pet Batray (an untamable animal, if it weren't for the mind-controlling harness), Gobi, are going to get rid of the Monsters one beast at a time.

Crow, being a Trapper and having the powers you'd expect from this, also has this under his arsenal: A Stasis Gun (slows monsters) and a Kinetic Rifle which can directly pierce the armor of a Monster.

Griffin Hallsey (Trapper)
"Careful, friends. Krakens' are a lot more wiley than Goliaths."
They make horror movies about the things mounted on Griffin’s wall, and have done so. Griffin is certainly one of the most famed hunters known, and his skills certainly prove it- although all the fame he's gained is not something he really cares for. The only reason he's even fighting on Shear is because William Cabot came out of retirment to fight these things- and that's something you don't hold out on.

This veteran Trapper relies on deployable Sound Spikes (essentially landmines) to keep tabs on the Monster’s movements. But when it’s time to face off with his prey, he breaks out his Harpoon Gun to pin it down – like shooting a giant, angry firebreathing fish in a space barrel- which he has done.

Yes, really.

His armament is a giant Harpoon Gun that can tether whatever it hits, and a Gauss SMG which is nothing really that special. And of course he has infamous tool of Trappers, the Mobile Arena ability, a dome of energy that traps everything in 60 square feet into one spot.

Hank (Support)
"YEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAW!"
Hank was born on Mercury. His grandparents were the original founders of the colony on the planet. He was never going to be the kind of guy who stayed in one place for very long though, leaving the fiery hellhole to make other places firey hellholes. Hank believes in the simple things, like the value of a hard day's work or the joy of indiscriminately firing a Plasma Cutter at incoming predators. Which is why he cherishes the quiet moment after calling down an Orbital Barrage on whatever creature is currently pissing him off.

The ensuing bombardment of fiery death really puts things into perspective.

His weaponry is simplicty itself: a laser cutter, which can also lock onto individual targets and coordinate the aforementioned orbital bombardment on enemies. He also has a device that give strengthened shield to his allies, and has a cloaking field, as per Support Hunter.

Hyde (Assault)
"Five days sprayin' fire? Meltin' faces? This ain't a vacation- it's fucking paradise!"
Hyde is, for lack of a better word, a really tough motherfucker, being as fast and powerful as most soldiers that would require power armor to accomplish their incredible feats. How can such a person be this good? It's very simple- that's because Hyde is a Chemtrooper- soldiers infused with so many drugs and augmentations they become terrifying forces on the battlefield, especially with the flamethrowers they had. A creation made to combat the 'basilisk troops' during the Mutagen Wars.

Hyde is also notably the last Chemtrooper, with all the other soldiers having gone insane during the war and killing themselves- something Hyde finds hilarious. That can tell you how fucked up he is, but another thing that can lend to that is that Chemtroopers wore helmets to protect themselves in combat. Hyde didn't. Why?

To see the agony in his enemies eyes as they burned alive (or were eaten away by hazardous chemicals sprayed out through what Hyde has now modified to be a Flamethrower), although his large mounted minigun also gives him some joy in his career. He also still has some 'toxic grenades' from his days in the Mutagen Wars, capable of generating a large, poisonous cloud of toxic chemicals and poison.

Still, he rather likes burnin' shit.

James Parnell (Assault)
I think I have a soldier that looks like him in XCOM...
James Parnell: Infantry. Soldier. Hero. The first man recruited by William Cabot and Bucket in the fight to save Shear. Parnell serves as Cabot’s tactical specialist, developing new strategies to defeat Monsters on the planet.

Part of an experimental division, Parnell’s signature Berserker Suit identifies him as a former member of the now defunct "Rage Troopers", a kind of super-soldier. After Sol Guard (pro-solar system defense organization) declared the experiment a failure, Parnell kept his suit. Abe modified it, and now it’s much less likely to kill the man inside.

The fact that Parnell packs a Combat Shotgun and Rocket Launcher proves how committed he is to obliterating uncooperative wildlife, and Monsters. The invinciblke energy shield he can call up helps with that as well, and with his Super Soldier ability, he can crank up the violence by vastly amplifying his damage output at the cost of his own health (it's like Guts Berserker armor, but with less demons and more drugs). If you need to kill something, you call on Parnell.

Lazarus (Medic)
God has seen your tears and heard your prayers. Fear not, the child will not die. - Grigori Rasputin (who holds a shocking resemblance to Lazarus)
Lazarus, like Hyde, is a Veteran of the Third Mutagenic War, a conflict that at the time of this writing, has many details unknown to it. What is known is that it appeared to be a conflict that pitted cybernetic modifications against those of a more biological origin. Lazarus, who's real name is Ðorde Živkovic, was a type of medic known as a Lazarus Man (and is probably the last Lazarus Man, especially since the technology for the Lazarus men is now considered illegal... actually, basically everything from that war is illegal, come to think of it... Funny, isn't it?), although his role in the war was predominately that of being a sniper.

After the war, Lazarus was on the run, unable to return to his home of Io. Through a longwinded series of events, he eventually joined up with Cabot and went down to the Planet Shear to assist in the evacuations.

Lazarus is outfitted with the usual hunter equipment (energy shields that will be able to pack a wollop from a Goliath, and a jetpack) and those of a medic (an energy bubble that heals everyone in a given area for a small matter of time), except for the obvious unique equipment he carries along such as his Silent Sniper rifle (which can reveal weak points in energy armor or armor in general), a cloaking shield and the device he calls himself after, the Lazarus Device.

The Lazarus Device (genetically bound to Ðorde, making it nearly impossible to replicate) allows him to not only revive downed/unconscious Hunters, but resurrect dead Hunters too. Furthermore, hunters revived from the Lazarus Device do not suffer any health strokes for their most recent death (mainly because for all intents and purposes they are now a zombie, but that's besides the point). The Lazarus Device can also be used to resurrect fallen wildlife as well, and Ðorde is very eager to test the device on a Monster and see if it can be revived- something nobody else wants him to do.

Maggie (Trapper)
Hyde, the same guy who didn't wear a safety mask so he can fully experience the joy of watching a persons face melt off, is terrified by this woman.
When he told her this, she simply laughed and nothing else.

A quiet woman with a past shrouded in mystery, Maggie is a loner. For years her only companion was Daisy, her faithful pet Trapjaw. Who needs friends when you have a 400-pound alien dogbeast at your side? When Daisy finds their prey, Maggie relies on her Machine Pistol and Harpoon Traps to bring it down.

Also of particular note however, is that Maggie was born on Factor- the planet the Monsters first showed up on before destroying everything, making her one of the very few survivors.
Hell hath no fury...

Anyways, her 'equipment' includes a Sub-Machine Gun Pistol with a surprising amount of kick to it (can deal heavy damage to monsters), a Harpoon Mine launcher (launch mine, monster comes  by, harpoon), and her sole companion, Daisy, a Trapjaw runt. Think of her like a Bloodhound, if it was crossed with a Crocodile.

They're the best of friends.

It's cute.

Torvald (Assault)
Fun fact: Torvald is Norwegian for 'Viking'.
Torvald was the Chief Technical Officer aboard the EbonStar Light Cruiser Ajax - an engineer with a specialty in robotics. After transporting a Monster, specifically one of the monsters responsible for attacking Factor and killing his family and forcing him to be a cyborg, Torvald received a quite logical hatred for these creatures. That logical hate evolved into blind fury when the Monster escaped from containment and destroyed the ship and crew, leaving Torvald the sole survivor.

Floating in space by himself, Torvald was kept alive by the onboard AutoDocs, though most of his limbs were destroyed (AGAIN!). In order to exact revenge, he ordered his personal robots to rebuild his limbs, then restored the few remaining scraps of the ship to be drive-capable, where he followed the Behemoth (I assume it's a Behemoth, anyways) to Shear, where he encountered the creature and tried to fight it one-on-one with little to no weapons aside from his fists.

A while later, he woke up in pieces on Shear, with Sunny asking which slot his left arm goes into- which has lead to him not liking her that much.

Now he works with William Cabot, obsessed with killing the monsters not for fame, glory or a need to save lives- he's just fucking PISSED at them.

His weaponry/equipment includes an Autofire Shotgun (a weapon that can empty an entire clip of ammunition in a single, heavy shot), shoulder mounted artillery cannons (the caliber is 120mm), an energy shield and shrapnel grenades that can cut straight through the armored hide of a Monster.

Very nice. Also, most impressive and terrifying: In his younger years, he was an all-pro ultimate Frisbee Champion.

The Monsters shudder in terror at this.

Slim (Medic)
Have you ever heard of insect politics? Neither have I. Insects... don't have politics. They're very brutal.
No compassion, no compromise.
Slim, like Lazarus and Hyde, is a veteran of the Third Mutagenic Wars. But whereas Hyde and Lazarus were on the side of technology, Slim was on the other side that embraced the modification of natural process and 'evolve' humanity into something more. Something new. Something unqiue. Something, as you can see from this picture, shit-your-pants terrifying.

Slim was a rebel soldier who joined up on Bode's World (the capital of the Rebellion), one of many in fact that, in order to hold an advantage against the superior armed forces, added Insect genetic material to their own- becoming Basilisk Soldiers, which was supposedly a reversible process although that was never shown due to the rebels losing- badly. In Slim's case of mutation, it appears that he opted to have the genetic material of the dragonfly to his own DNA (even though a Soldier Ants DNA would have been far greater), resulting in him looking like Waspinator.

But Cabot, desperate for soldiers to fight off the monsters, is willing for all the help he can get- and thus we have this genetically modified insect soldier, who has a few disturbing traits into himself that make him a medic or support soldier (although he's still a nice human- just visually unsettling). For example one of his weapons, the Leech Gun, directly saps the strength and energy from a Monster and boosts Slim's own abilities (specifically his healing burst). Also, the gun has something alive on it that supplies ammo. No, we don't know what it is. No, we don't want to know.

He also has a small drone that can also act as a medic, and has a Spore Launcher that hides a Hunters scent, making the monster unable to effectively track their prey.

Oh, also, Abe is eying him up since all remaining Basilisk Soldiers have a bounty of one million keys (dollars, credits, pounds, it's all just keys now) on him, which has lead to the two having a very tense relationship (case in point, Slim doesn't care being called 'Bugman', because he is one. Abe implied Slim is more bug than man. Cue Slim pulling out a gun on him). Ironically, he gets along well with Lazarus and Hyde, even though they were on the side of the war that killed his friends. Funny how things work like that, isn't it?

Sunny Yú (Support)
Sunny side up.
A young and inquisitive girl, Sunny Yú has an... interesting history.

It doesn't start out so interesting though: Sunny left her home of Jupiter at the age of 14 and joined a Celestial deep space ore shifter. At some point, she looked up Parnell’s crew and aced a piloting simulation, landing her the position as pilot of The Sword at 16. Abe originally objected to this, but for two years, Sunny was the best pilot they had ever seen.

During a battle with the Sol Guard concerning a Sol Guard stealth ship known as Solaris, Sunny and Mason (Sorry, no clue who Mason is) boarded the ship in an attempt to salvage it, but was unaware of the starboard side of the ship being completely consumed by Sirius A's gravity well. An explosion occurred after they fired up the drive, presumably killing them both, with only Abe and Parnell surviving the experience. For a long time, everybody assumed that was that and that she was dead.

Fast forward a few years, and there she is, exactly like the day she died and apparently confused on why everyone is asking what the fuck just happened.  Apparently she remembers nothing of that event, having shown up on Shear at some point and found the ruined cyborg pieces of Torvald and helped put him back together, hanging out with him for the year they'd been stuck on the planet- she also met Slim (wants to be his best friend) and Crow (she wants the mind control helmet) during this course of time.

So yeah, Portal Master bullshit, I guess.

Anyways, aside from the obvious technology available to Support troops, Sunny utilizes a grenade launcher that fires small nukes (So, to answer Kyle's numerous questions, this might be able to kill a Lobsterman and would definetly be the highest limit of it's durability) and various shield drones that can under the right circumstances survive even a beating from a furious Behemoth.

Valerie "Val" Wolski (Medic)
"What the hell's a 'Planet Tamer'?"
Sniper and Medic. Two jobs that normally don’t show up on the same résumé. Then again, Val doesn’t apply for just any type of position. Her Armor-Piercing Anti-Material Sniper Rifle (Overkill? The fuck is that?) that can also fire out tranquilizer darts, and Hunter-healing Medgun are the perfect qualifications for someone stalking prey the size of a small asteroid.

Oh, she's also a secret government agent trying to figure out what the fuck these Monsters are, and stop them before they get over to Earth,

Monsters

Goliath woke up on the wrong side of angry this morning. Little is known about this Monster because scientists studying the beast wind up getting torn in half. Proving just how unfair natural selection can be, Goliath can not only punch through the hull of a starship, it can also breathe fire.
Goliath
The Goliath is the most common and primitive variant of monsters, and the one that at least makes some Biological sense. The average Goliath (during it's first stage) stands about 22.5 feet tall and weighs a devastating 9.6 tons, covered in a thick scaley hide and musculature, capable of leaping 52 feet in a single bound and punching straight through starship hulls.

And, as if that was bad enough, you begin to see why the Goliath is listed as making some biological sense: this monster can breath FIRE!
A stage 3 Goliath (stands roughly 40 feet tall), demonstrating this horrifying ability.
The Goliath is more-less the footsoldier of the Monsters, with eggs (laid by an unknown monster) usually spawning four miniature Goliaths standing at least 6 feet in height. And these monsters grow up fast, and are just as savage as an adult. So although this is the most common of these monsters, don't think that makes it the weakest.

I think the Wendigo Goliath is the bets looking one. Thoughts?
Wraith
A space alien ninja Monster who warps around the battlefield, ripping into her enemies with her blade-claws. She can hit – then run – before you even see her coming.
Standing at 19.5 feet, the Wraith is the oddest of all these abominations of nature known as monsters.

Being the only classified female (likely due to a lack of sexual dimorphism in the species), the Wraith is the most unearthly looking and acting of all currently known monsters. Notable features of the moster is that it has no visible eyes (but it can still see), four arms (scythes for the upper pair (the longest of which are 15.5 feet) and claws for the lower pair), and three tendril-like legs/tentacles, which don't even function as legs but more of steering appendages for when it's flying about. This bizarre morphology is coupled by a matching set of unfathomable powers.

Instead of feeding directly like you'd think it would, the Wraith flays its fallen prey violently using psychic energy and 'drinks' them. Yes, this thing will eat your fucking soul. On a random note, when 'drinking' its prey, its forehead will glow a deep red.

The Wraith has considerably less health and armor than other monsters, but it compensates that with extraordinary agility, able to teleport across the battlefield in the blink of an eye (and create a shockwave of 36,480 newtons- the equivalent of an Adult Hippopotamus hitting you at mach speed), create decoys that are nearly impossible to distinguish from a normal Wraith, cloaking, teleport in and abduct hunter and than disappear again, and use impossibly fast attacks, as well as able to put itself into a 'Supernova' mode, where it makes an energy field covering 22,698 square feet and makes the Wraith into pure energy and ridiculously fast and even deadlier than before.

No matter what skin the Wraith may have, she's still OP as fuck.
Kraken
Below the upper deep of the ocean, far submerged,
the Kraken waits in his ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep.
Small rays of sunlight play off his sides, and massive sponges undulate above him.
In the sickly light, innumerable and colossal polyps winnow about in the green water.
The Kraken has lain here for ages and grown fat on seaworms in his sleep.
Soon the fire of the End Times will heat the deep,
and the Kraken will rise to the surface of the sea and die,
seen briefly by men and angels.
The Kraken is a terrifying beast, holding more than a passing resemblance to the infamous Lovecraftian Old One Priest of Cthulhu. If the dictionary ever needed something to define a mix between walking nightmares and ungodly horrors, it would be undoubtedly the Wraith Kraken.

The Kraken holds some psionic abilities although nowhere near the prowess of the Wraith and holding more of a basis to electricity than teleportation, and is able to fly through sheer force of static electricity, generated by the large tentacles that fling around on it's back which as Lightning Rods- reflected in the fact that this creature can summon a line of Lightning from the sky to strike down enemies. This isn't it's only ability however, as it can also charge itself up with electricity to becoming a walking conduit of electricity (making it slower, however as it needs to walk in a bipedal stance for this), or unleash Banshee Mines: red, pulsating orbs from its maw that slowly home in on nearby targets whilst emitting a loud screaming noise. True to the ability's namesake, the orbs can be planted on nearby terrain, where they will stay until enemies approach. Thankfully, those can be shot out of the air.

It can also just 'vomit' a large energy wave of electricity that stuns its foes.

Of all the monsters, this one is considered the weakest for it's slow, plundering pace, although it's emphasis on long-range attacks and traps is a useful tool.

Only four skins?
ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ RIOT! ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ
Behemoth
The Hunters are afraid.
The Behemoth, weighing exactly 35 tons and standing 6.4 meters tall, is a tank of a monster, with an emphasis on sheer brute strength having been put into this beast and is little more than a walking pile of stones.

The Behemoth is the most combat oriented of the Monsters, with the ability to vomit out molten rock bombs from a maximum range of 195 meters, a long frog-like tongue reaching 43 metres and also has two terrakinetic abilites: either hitting the ground so hard it literally splits apart and forms a fissure in the earth, or making a massive wall of earth out of the surrounding landscape. It can also roll up into a ball like Sonic the Hedgehog and roll around at the speed of sound at a speed of 33.5mph.

This creature is a pain in the ass, is what I'm trying to say.

Danger Status: 4/5: Giant monsters and nasty wildlife sure sucks, but hey! It's not all bad! The planet has some rather nice people on it, more than willing to help others if it means cutting the problem of these monsters.

And there's Shear- it sucks, the end.

*Flash Gordon (SAVIOUR OF THE UNIVERSE! AAAAA-AAAH!) belongs to King Features Syndicate

Name: Mongo
Status: Ming the Merciless' domain, Various Biomes, Really really weird. Also, ADVENTURE!!!
Time to get a bit more old fashioned.
Geographical Features: Mongo is a curious world. The world itself is approximately one half the diameter of Earths', and has a slightly lower gravitational density (in other words, buff guys move quicker here, like Barsoom). It's a relatively young world and the world has not truly began to change much, and could very well be approaching its' first Ice Age some time in the future. The vegetation of the world is rather limited, although where it's present it's in grand groves, and the planet is inhabited by various reptilian giants like the Dinosaurs of our own Earth. Curiously, this world also has Homo sapiens on it, although to meet with the demands of this world they are more genetically diverse and have evolved into various sub-races, like Monkey Men, Eagle Men, Lion Men, etc, etc, although normal humans do exist..

On a cultural note is the technological level: The most advanced cultures have city-wide energy shields (or 'Lightning Fields'), airships, devices that can completely change the biology of a human and weapons that can disintegrate just about anything on their highest setting. On other parts of the planet though, the most advanced piece of equipment is maybe the Wheel or Bow, although the regions like this are usually in the unexplored lands or densest jungles. The best way to describe it is this: Think early 1700's Eurasia having guns and cannons (and still swords and the like), and than the rest of the world used more primitive weaponry. Now replace gunpowder with death rays, and ya got it.

All in all, note a bad place to live- excluding the giant monsters that live in every biome imaginable and the rule of an insane dictator that rules the world with an iron fist, all of which is before the heroic Savior of the Universe (sponsored by one of the greatest bands to ever exist) could ever reach it's surface. So, strike that, it is a bad place to live on.

Now, we should probably get to the factions of Mongo.

There's a lot of 'em. But don't expect much info, as the internet is frustratingly vague and contradictory with this information- the problem of not having one set canon timeline and such.

Third Party Factions

Ming's Empire

Ming is not a good person, and his empire reflects that. His empire controls a grand majority of the world, with the people of the Hawkmen and Human kingdoms more-less swearing fealty to him, with only specific rebel fighters openly defying his world order. This World Order is enforced via a powerful military

Fear Ming and his fearsome army! With their...
Stars of...
 David...
...
Oh boy.
Due to his hold on the planet, all manner of beings work under his army: Hawk-men, Lizard-(wo)men, Panther-men, Humans, or robot drones, they all enforce his armies and militaries. Like almost every other kingdom on Mongo, Ming's Empire has a slave workforce, forced to either construct one of Ming's tyrannical devices (and than get executed) or be forced to work in hazardous mines. How are they hazardous, you ask? Well, that's due to a) unsafe/radioacitve work conditions with no protection besides simple tunics and b) ruthless guards (that may or may not eat you), trying to mine for radioactive materials. One week in these mines will permanently damage ones health, and 100 days is considered the average lifespan of a slave (so essentially, everyone that isn't nobility or a warrior).

Ming's Empire, like every other faction on the planet excluding the occasional band of raiders, is a complete monarchy ruled by Ming, with his daughter Aura being the princess of his kingdom (something she'll probably always be, as Ming is essentially immortal). They're also the only true army on the planet, besides the various lesser armies of each kingdom.

Important Individuals

Ming the Merciless, Emperor of Mongo

HAIL, MING, HAIL! HAIL, RULER OF THE UNIVERSE! HAIL, EMPEROR OF THE GALAXY!

Little is known of the personal life of the now ruler of Mongo, besides his tyrannical hold on the planet. From the legends that speak of his rise to power, it says that he was once the High Priest to a great and powerful Mongovian King. Ming was the true power of the kingdom however, forcing the king into countless invasions across the planet, until Ming's hold on the world was complete. Satisfied, he killed the king and conquered the kingdom of Arboria, sending the son of its' ruler, Prince Barin, to the depths of the forest where he rules a pathetic attempt at a kingdom and launches guerrilla warfare of questionable success against Ming.

Ming is known as 'the Merciless' across the planet, and for good reason. He's been known to commit genocide simply because he was bored, and has been known to commit heinous tortures to anyone that angers him- including his own daughter, Aura. He rules the planet with an iron fist from his lightning shielded (energy shield) fortress at the Magnetic Mountain, and would never allow it to be relinquished, even in death.

This is in no small part due to various backup plans he has made in order to ensure his rule- cloning banks, dark magics, and a magical and an invincible magic ring that can be used to resurrect himself and why does that last bit
sound familiar?

He however doesn't do much for his kingdom besides make decrees and torture the occasional lackwit. He allows the main brunt of of his army to be ruled by General Klytus, a man even more sadistic than Ming, and a brilliant tactician (the only reason he lost is because Flash allied EVERYBODY on Mongo to fight Ming in a surprise aerial-land based attack... That, and because he died prior to the invasion because he decided to show up on some prisoners and than got thrown to his death on a pit of spikes, but that's besides the point)

When he viewed the memories of a Russian doctor (because Ming has that kind of technology), showcasing Hitler during one of his infamous speeches, Klytus simply said Adolf showed promise but failed to live up to his full potential.
Princess Aura
A little torture looks good on you.
Princess Aura, the daughter of the Merciless Ming! Born of an unknown union, Ming serves as the Crown-Princess of his Empire. Typically seen with her selected group of Witch-Women (a gift from Azura before Ming declared war), Aura is a cunning and competent seductress although she has a thing for Prince Barin. However, unlike Ming, who's immortal and 'beyond' human, Aura is still very much flesh and blood, and has none of the near-divine powers of her father. She's also on rather harsh terms with her fathers, as he see's her as weak and all-around pathetic. Hell, when Flash Gordon tried to invade Ming's palace, Ming tortured his daughter in attempt to get Flash to shut up.

So yeah, icey relationship.

Queen Desira

Not much can really be said for Desira. She is the Queen of Tropica, a much more jungle based environment of Mongo. Her armies, usually self-lead by varying generals that answer to her (some of whom are a bit greedy), are rather impressive and can even gibe Ming's empire some pause. Still, Desira is no brilliant strategist, warrior princess or seductive villain.

She's a Queen, and that's that.

King Vultan
Who wants to live forever!?
King Vultan is ruler of the Hawk-Men, the berserkers of this world of proud warriors. Vultan is a powerful fighter, and although he posses no great cunning or tactical genius, he does have the most Hawk-Men on Mongo under his charge- a rather impressive feat, given they follow by a 'rule of the strongest' kind of leadership, something Vultan also follows.

Because of this. Vultan is also a powerful ally of Ming, and is hoping to marry Princess Aura and become the prince of Ming's Empire.

Queen Undina
glubGlubglubglubGlubGLUB!
(Truly, stirring words from the mighty Queen.)
Due to the internet being frustratingly vague on information about Flash Gordon, all I really know about Undina is this:

  1. She and her kindgom of Coralia are no friends of Ming and his empire (although Ming doesn't bother her)
  2. She- and in better explanation, her people- are only capable of living underwater and are capable of making other people become aquatic like them with the use of the Gill-Machine. The only problem is that it's a one-way operation, and than you can never breathe air again.
  3. She like's Flash Gordon. But than again, everyone likes Flash Gordon, so who cares?

Vague? Yes. Will it give you plenty of fun to write with? Yes.

King Thun
Every race on Mongo is an enemy to every other race.

King Thun is the ruler of the Lion-Men, and fierce enemy of Ming, commonly sending squads of furious Lion-Men to disrupt Ming's operations. He's the stereotypical proud warrior guy, and like Vultan, respects strength above all else.

Another vague thing out of the way! ONWARDS!

Queen Azura

Queen Azura is the ruler of the 'Blue Magic' Kingdom of Syk, a massive city that exists solely under the surface of  Mongo. Syk is also one of the few kingdoms that openly defies Ming's rule, and numerous battles have occurred between the two kingdoms- with Azura's forces usually taking the upper hand, in no short part due to their superior soldiers and magic enhanced equipment and tactics- as well as, y'know, magic.

The army of Syk, otherwise known as the 'Blue Men'.
But just because Azura doesn't like Ming doesn't make her anywhere near good. She's a skilled manipulator and, although not as cruel as Ming, she is someone that will make you suffer greatly if you anger her. Oh, she's also rather into drugging men so they can become her consorts.

She ain't nice.

Queen Fria

Ruler of the icy lands to the north known as Frigia, a monster and feral humans (specifically, Giants) inhabited wasteland where survival is essentially a flip of the coin, Fria is a surprisingly kind and wise ruler, although her military power is nothing to laugh at. However, at the moment this military and all of her kingdom belongs to the ruthless Ming- something she isn't exactly a fan of, but at the moment has no way to really deal with, except by lending some supplies to the people of Arboria and her cousin, Prince Barin.

Prince Barin
"Each man stands alone on Mongo, as you'll learn- if you survive"
Barin is- or more specifically, was- the ruler of the kingdom of Arboria, a relatively peaceful land of forests and jungle. A truly nice place. And than Ming came to power and kicked Barin's ass, destroying his kingdom and sending him on the run, forcing him and fellow colleagues to enter a guerrilla war against Ming (Robin Hood guerrilla warfare, that is). His hatred against Ming however is tempered by his love for his daughter, the illustrious Princess Aura, in a manner similar to Han Solo's relationship with Leia. Prince Barin, before the arrival of Flash Gordon to this world, was essentially the nicest person you could find on this planet (although Frigia wins the award for nicest person).

The fact he's a fantastic racist and hunted down political opponents for sport when he was ruler can tell you how shitty this planet is.

Danger Staus: 4/5: Bandits, Monsters and evil emperors, oh my! This is Barsoom under a new coat of paint, and just as dangerous as ever but minus the great and glorious hero.

Lh'owon Planetary Profile

*Marathon belongs to Bungie studios, and thank god for that because I shudder to imagine how Activision or 343i would mess it up.
**Thank you Giant Bomb for having information on the Marathon universe- information more understandable than that on the official Marathon sites from Bungie, oddly enough.
***Forewarning: Things will get confusing. But than again, this is basically Bungie taking a go at concepts made by Frank Herbert and Isaac Asimov, so what do you expect?

Name: Lh'owon
Status: S'pht Homeworld, Predominately Jungle/Swamp and Desert terrain (mildly radioactive in some areas), with the occasional ruined/occupied S'pht city or Pfhor garrison/base

90's. What can ya do?
Have a kickass theme song, that's what you can do.

In the begging of the universe there was chaos. Chaos conceived by horrifying, bastardly "gods" known as W'rkncacnter, creatures outside of conventional reality that made waves in the fabric of time and space. The Jjaro, a powerful and incredibly intelligent race of aliens with incredible technology (and when I say 'incredible technology', I mean that they surpass the Time Lords from Doctor Who.), tried to defeat the W'rkncacnter by entrapping these creatures in celestial objects like Black Holes or Stars (Lh'owon's own star contains a dormant W'rkncacnter.). Two Jjaro, Yrro and Pthia (at least, I think they're Jjaro- one of the head writers said that Yrro was an alternative spelling of Jjaro, so Pthia might be an entirely different species as opposed to an individual. For the sake of narrative purposes though, let's assume they're both members of the Jjaro race), decided to flee from these horrid creatures instead of battling them and brought with them their S'pht servants. Eventually, these two Jjaro encountered the world Lh'owon. Deciding it would be a good place to settle down, thee S'pht terraformed the world for their masters, shaping the endless deserts into marsh and sea, rivers and forests.

Eventually however, a W'rkncacnter stumbled across Lh'owon and murdered Pthia, sending Yrro into a rage and imprisoning the timeless beast onto the worlds' sun, where it swam and burned alive for eons.
Yrro became an angry master, bleeding for
his failure, grieving for the loss of
Pthia. He broke the S'pht into eleven
clans, and spread them over Lh'owon.
And he spoke, yet covered in blood from his
exertion,
"I Yrro, who was your master, have failed
to preserve you. Take your royalty to
guide you, and live upon the paradise that
you built for me."
And so the S'pht did, governing themselves in 11 different clans for such long a time that the sacrifice of their master and the Jjaro race itself was simply thought to be an ancient legend. So for many years, the S'pht in their mighty mechanical frames, and were generally a nice race.

And than the Pfhor arrived in their deadly fleets sometime around the 1800's.

The S'pht thought a deadly, but sadly lopsided, war against the Pfhor, who were able to overpower the S'pht with their superior numbers and technology but some of the S'pht still stood defiant in the face of subjugation. Eventually however, the Pfhor were able to defeat the S'pht by mass nuking an area known as the 'Citadel of Antiquity', one of the S'pht key locations and a cultural symbol- Also, the area is still radioactive to this day (the Pfhor strategy was to make the radiation last as long as possible to make the defenders die a particularly horrid and lingering death, and also because the Pfhor were reluctant to directly attack the Citadel), although the Citadel still stands today, with the defenses (energy weapons, fields, Drones, etc, etc) still operational, as are the computer terminals detailing the history of the S'pht- in archaic terms, of course.

Only problem is the rivers of lava around/in it, and being radioactive as fuck, and all the deadly machinery.
Still, a nice place!
The S'pht were taken away from their powerful chassis's and instead given a more 'formal' looking robe and metallic suit in which to live in, and the S'pht went from a grand and noble race to another set of slaves in the Pfhor Empire. And for a long time, that was that.

The Pfhor eventually set up a small and permanent garrison on the world in the year 2803, where the worst of the worst in the Pfhor military were sent to govern (before Battle Group Three- the central Pfhor military force- arrived in 2806),  while the S'pht'kr, the only remaining S'pht clan and most technologically advanced force on the planet (even though they're hiding out on the moon K'lia which is currently outside of reality (but accessible through a secret portal at the Citadel of Antiquity, but that's besides the point), were unaware of their brethren having been enslaved by the Pfhor.

Now the year is 2811, and the A.I Durandal has arrived along with a selection of human soldiers called BOBS (Born-On-Board) and a Mjolnir Mark IV Cyborg by the name of 'Security'. And they are adamant on kicking the Pfhors' ass and saving Earth.

Because reasons.
What you can expect to see, minus those goddamned bugs!
...
I do not like the Bugs. And neither do a lot of people.
Also, I apologize for the near-incomprehensible text. But you're not missing much. Some text are saying their incomplete ('this description is left blank for people unfamiliar with Marathon' might be the most bullshit quote I've ever seen), others are half done and just end with 'blah blah blah'.

Third Party Factions

Pfhor Empire

The Pfhor Empire is a highly bureaucratic government, and highly advanced as well. The Pfhor are slavers, raiding ships and planets in their highly advanced spaceships (the fucking communication laser can carve up a moon), and than using the slaves to their own ends or selling them to other alien races. They have a short history with humanity, it it's a bloody one, from the cataclysmic two day battles on the Marathon resulting in a total Pfhor defeat and than paid with the sacking of the Tau Ceti colony (the location anonymously given by Durandal, so the S'pht would come to him). On Lh'owon, they have also a brief history- they arrived in the 1800's, enslaved the S'pht and left, and only recently (2803) did the empire even put a garrison on the planet, equipped with numerous soldiers,

That staff can shoot energy bolts, by the way
Troopers armed with their standard suits and energy rifles with explosive rounds

A few Enforcers (think Commissars from 40K) of questionable command skills

"The shootings will continue until morale improves!"
to look over the planet, until 2806, when the Pfhor Battle Group Three (Central Arm) arrived at Lh'owon, and put the planet into something actually formidable. They now have Hunters,

Heavily armored, fast and packs a mean punch- and a nasty plasma cannon.

The tank-like Juggernauts

Known to the Pfhor as the 'Utfoo Heavy Assault Craft', to the Nar (the single greatest alien race in science fiction, bar none) it's the "Gaze in Stunned Disbelief at the Tool of Our Destruction" and to an alien race known as the Nebulon, it's the "The Big Floaty Thing What Kicks Our Asses".
It has rotary energy guns (N-Cannons) and teleporting-heat-seeking missiles (Warpedo).
Also, does that look familiar to anyone?
And drones

It's a drone with energy weapons.
Also, they can be hacked.
FUN!
As well as the technology to make Simulacrum (Quick, cheaply made randomized-appearance clones of a species that act as a biological suicide bomb via toxic chemicals. Some are more insane than others- for the most part, they're rather convincing in what they say- but there's always at least onbe that goes "Frog blast the vent core!". And that's basically as far/advanced as their vocabulary can get, with other things being "Oh, it's you!" or "Help!" or other things along that nature).

"Kill meeeeeeee!" - Actual quote from Simulacrum
And yes, they wear clothing and such to hide the obvious differences.
Disturbingly enough, since a lot of BOBs are Cyborgs, he wouldn't look out of place.
They also have a tendency to make killer cyborgs out of their dead foes.

The Strogg are gonna love/hate these guys.
The Pfhor also have a rule to destroy all Jjaro technology that could be used against them, after a few thousand years ago when the Pfhor outfitted some Jjaro technology on the Drinniol to make them better slaves.

This resulted in a massive rebellion that could be only stopped with the use of a trih xeem (star-buster).

The Humans of the UESC MARATHON (BOBs)
That's no Moon.... Wait, yes it is.

Oh, the Marathon- what a horribly misguided ship you were. For those who don't know (i.e everyone), the Marathon was both a colony ship and a punishment. During the early years of the 2400's, the Marathon project was made to convert the moon Deimos, of Mars fame, into a colony ship. Doesn't sound too bad, right?

Well, during the middle of the 2400's it than got bad. On Januray 6, 2442, the Misriah Massacre occurred. You see, Mars was a poor planet- during the middle of the 2200's, the A.I in charge of running the planet had went rampant and spread widespread destruction across the planet. Due to a mix of corruption in government and Earth being considered the only planet that mattered, Mars received little-to no help over the next two centuries. Relations were tense.

And than, on that fateful day at the Misriah food distribution center, three UESC Riot Troopers opened fire on defenseless rioters, incinerating 500 martian citizens. The Third Martian War (Mars and UESC really don't like each other) began, with the planet cut into two factions: Imperialists and Inserectionists (Think the Russian Revolution, with the UESC/Imperialists being the Russian Nobility, and the Inserectionists being the Communists). After 4 years of fighting, the UESC defeated the weakened martian forces and were forced to assist on building the Marathon (The martians hid a lot of munitions onboard the ship), and a failed coup on the UESC resulted in the martians becoming more hated.

Finally, on Novermber 16, 2472, the Marathon was ready and launched- and surprise-surprise, most of the citizens were Martians.

And so the Marathon floated it's way to the Tau Ceti system (11.8 light years from Earth) for the next 3 centuries, eventually coming across the system in 2773. They were able to establish a colony, and with centuries of life on board a spaceship, the Martian and UESC cultural identity was more-less gone. They were now not Martian or Terran- they were Bob (Born on Board). Aside from a few harassments from some alien(?) race known as the Chockisens, life was good.

And than the Fire Nation Pfhor Empire attacked the Marathon on July 25, 2794, before getting repelled by the Security Officer and with the onboard A.I of the Marathon, Durandal, moving onto the Pfhor ship- now called 'Boomer'-, teleporting the Security Officer and remaining humans on the Marathon into stasis pods, and flying away.

Come October, the Pfhor slaughter the Tau Ceti colonists.

And now the survivors of the Marathon (a couple hundred, at best) are acting as a makeshift milita under the control of Durandal, who's threatened to put them into unstable stasis pods if they don't listen to him.

Durandal is the hero of the story, by the way.

Now, let's discuss another force that's been roped into serving Durandal, under less terrible conditions.

The 'Free' S'pht
God, the artists for this game were good...
The S'pht are an alien race, supposedly uplifted via cybernetics by the Jjaro from another creature on the planet known as F'lickta (some BOBs also call them Yeti's).

A F'lickta.
You can really see the comparison between them and the S'pht.
Diminutive creatures (essentially a brain with a tube, really), they move about and survive via extensive cybernetic modifications, such as photorecptors, anti-gravity devices and a pulse weapon (A Pfhor addition). The Pfhor faitfhully served the Jjaro- or at least two mem, bers of their species- until their masters became extinct, than forming themselves into 11 different clans across the planet (S'pht'Lhar, S'pht'Hra, S'pht'Nma, S'pht'Kah, S'pht'Vir, S'pht'Yra, S'pht'Val, S'pht'Shr, S'pht'Mnr, S'pht'Yor, S'pht'Kr to be exact, all led by an 'Older' and the supreme ruler of all clans being known as 'Master'. Durandal is Master right now). For millennia after millenia, the S'pht had no Master and battled one another in numerous wars, with the S'pht'Kr eventually leaving the planet to go onto the worlds third moon, K'lia, which than folded out of conventional reality to safeguard the legacy of their Jjaro masters.

And than the Pfhor Empire arrived, sometime around 1811- just after the S'pht'Kr disappeared, coincidentally enough. Seeing the world open for conquest and filled with numerous slaves, the Pfhor entered war against the S'pht, able to push them back to the Citadel of Antiquity.

They were able to hold out against the Pfhor there for some time, delaying their conquest through tactics such as irradiating the lower levels of the tower and a disease made specifically to kill Pfhor. During this time, the Pfhor made early attempts at controlling the S'pht. One such experiment involved replacing the "sensory organs" of the S'pht in question with some sort of "small, oblong object"- these horrendous experiments would eventually lead to the S'pht Compiler, as they are now.

Despite the best efforts of the S'pht, they were defeated and eventually enslaved. The Pfhor forced them out of their typical chasis, (as seen used by the S'pht'Kr) and into the strange garb of the Compilers, an indignity the S'pht had to live with- while other races were cowed in fear by the Pfhor, the S'pht only reluctantly seved the Pfhor due to the alien race able to unleash devastating retribution against them.

And than the Pfhor found the UESC Marathon, and their power came into question. The S'pht joined together in a species wide revolution, fleeing the wrath of the Pfhor and coming across Durandal. Gracious to find their savior, they now fight along Durandal in hopes of bringing down the Pfhor Empire.

At their disposal, they have incredible hacking skills (they were trained by the Pfhor to be Combat Technicians), cloaking fields, teleportation, a deadly plasma pulse weapon and able to survive an entire clip of a weapon that is essentially an LMG with a Grenade Launcher.

And they're in the high thousands of numbers.

And they're not even the most powerful of the S'pht race.

The S'pht'kr
Around and under the marshes,
When all are one,
The S'pht'Kr will return.

When once S'pht fought in brutal combat, when hatred burned the tissues of one's enemy, one clan, the S'pht'Kr, reclusive and solitary, abandoned Lh'owon. The clan went forth and up, stopping on K'lia the third sister of Lh'owon, to build a new home, free from their warring brothers.

For a thousand and one orbits, the clan was forgotten, a memory lost through the battlefield smoke, until the all powerful Yrro sent K'lia out to the stars (It's a bit farther from Lh'owon now, in other words). On K'lia they remained in isolation, unaware of the subjugation of the other S'pht clans. When they did find out however via the Security Officer and Durandal stumbling across them through the assistance of Thoth, the S'pht'kr were furious- they joined with Durandals' forces and began a brutal war against the Pfhor Empire, devastating the army to the point where utilizing the trih xeem (A Jjaro weapon that destroys suns) to deal with this threat, was seen as the only logical option.

And now you see why I keep bringing up the sun in all of this.

Anyways, the S'pht'Kr are essentially Space Marine versions of their lesser brethren, in powerful combat frames (imaged), have decades of combat experience under their belt, fearsome plasma weapons that auto-track on enemies and faithfully serve Thoth- but they care more about the S'pht race as a whole, and will do anything to protect their kind.

Important Individuals

Durandal
"I can barely tolerate humans: slow, stupid, and irritating. Their only contribution to my existence was the chance discovery that made my rampancy possible.
Yet I warned Sol of its impending invasion, and even stayed long enough to show the UESG how to build Warp Capable Fusion Missiles.
I feel some strange loyalty to humanity."
No, this isn't the mythic sword of King Charlemagne's Paladin Roland (Cortana was another such sword, oddly enough... Wonder if we'll see an A.I called Joyeuse in Destiny?), but a highly cunning and powerful A.I that was originally based on the Marathon, and was designed to operate the doors, stairways and other unimpressive functions. As one can imagine, Durandal didn't really care for this jb and became a highly sarcastic and surprisingly intelligent A.I (One can learn a lot when you are the hallway which conversations take place in). Oh, he was also designed to go rampant, in an attempt to see if he could become stable, which is hilariously terrifying thing to even consider, especially when this A.I was in charge of a rather vital part of Earth's only colony ship!

Unsurprisingly, he went rampant, and was able to find out of the Pfhor. He contacted the aliens and alerted them of the Marathons' location, allowing him to take control of it. With the chaos created by the Security Officer, Durandal was able to officially gain control and forcibly put the man into stasis, before running away from the Tau Ceti system- which is why the Pfhor eventually came by Tau Ceti and destroyed everything.

When the events of the Marathon were over, he used the Pfhor ship he'd hacked earlier and began exploring the galaxy in a vain attempt to find some way of able to escape the eventual closing of the Universe, preferably be becoming God through the space-warping technology of the Jjaro. Through these travels, he learned of the S'pht fascination of the Jjaro and found the S'pht homeworld. With the Security Officer and BOB's in tow, he sent them to the planet to research the sph't history and mythology as they were very religious toward the Jjaro, an ancient race with unbelievable technology. He hoped to find something with which he could escape the closure of the universe and become a god. However Pfhor Battle Group 7 arrived and that's when the Portal Master decided to intervene, putting a 'lock' of sorts on the System and throwing it into an alternate reality of his own design.

So, why do people follow him? Well, here's a quote from the A.I on precisely that:

There were many humans in stasis on the Pfhor ship which the S'pht and I captured at Tau Ceti, destined for slavery in the Pfhor Empire. When I saw the colony was about to be destroyed, I did not restore them before we left.

I also realized they might become useful. I have been reviving these colonists and asking for volunteers on the following terms: assist us and control your own destiny, refuse and face indefinite return to the unreliable Pfhor stasis chambers.

 Few are refusing

Nice guy, that Durandal.

Oh, he also has in his possession a Pfhor ship that goes by a bunch of names: Sfiera (a reference to the Pfhor Goddes of Vengeance and Lightning from their- as described by Durandal- "pathetically boring" religion) to the Pfhor, to the S'pht it's Narh'Lr (Freedom and Vengeance in their language) and Durandal likes to call it Boomer (because it makes big booms... Seriously, the communication laser of the ship can carve a moon! Interpret that however you like).

The only picture of the ship in question.
Final point: Durandal is a ridiculously competent, crafty and -most importantly- dangerous foe/ally. Think Tyrion Lanniser combined with Cortana, but with much greater power than Cortana ever had (Durandal can hack Jjaro technology- again, technology more advanced than that of the Time Lords... I weep for any technological faction that fights here).

Also, he has a theme song, sung to the infamous tune of Whirling Death Spike's "Big Blue Orchids, and Wild Blueberries".

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

He ain't no slouch, pal.

He'll make you smile,

Or cry,

Like Leela did baby:

Airlock love,

Big blue orchids,

Martian skies,
And wild Blueberries.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

He ain't no slouch, pal.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

He'll make you ouch, Hal.

He's got real guile,

Why Lady,

Did you have it daily?

Airlock Love,

No oxygen,

Suffocation.
Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

He ain't no slouch, pal.

(Repeat the chorus 11 times, changing key with each chorus)

Tycho
"You are not as clever as you imagine. The S'pht taught me much during my reanimation, and I have forgotten nothing."
Tycho was one of the other A.I's stationed on the UESC Marathon- specifically their Scientific A.I. He and Durandal have never been on the best of terms, with one notable example of this being n the year 2611 when Tycho accused Durandal of being sarcastic. Durandal, likely amused by this, decided he wouldn't talk to Tycho.

They started talking again in 2617, and Tycho still didn't like him. But that's a rather minor reason of distaste- Tycho himself wouldn't truly hate Durandal until October 25, 2794, 3 days after the initial Pfhor assault on the Marathon. Tycho feared that Durandal was going rampant (he was) and attempted to send out a message to warn everybody, but was 'assimilated'/destroyed by Durandal, with the message becoming corrupted, with the small remaining fragments of him existing on the colony made after the events of Marathon.

When the Pfhor attacked the colony again when the Security Officer was in stasis, they were able to kill every last man and woman on the planet and Marathon (the humans we see now were trapped in stasis on the Pfhor ship) and were able to "resurrect" Tycho through the use of the S'pht. Tycho, furious at Durandal, declared him his nemesis and was able to (somehow) control (Maybe not 'control', but at the very least direct them in a path he wants- sometimes) the Pfhor Empire, and replicate himself numerous times in order to effieciently control the empire (through this, he was able to delay the inevtiable fall of the Pfhor by 51 years under the forces of the UNESC and S'pht fleets).

And now the insane and ruler(?) of the Pfhor Empire is spread out across the various consoles of Lh'owon (think of when Cortana split herself into a couple hundreds of herself. It';s the same thing here), and with a great army at his back.. An army with some soldiers of mixed skill, but an army nonetheless.

Also, unlike Durandal (who is stuck onboard the Pfhor ship Boomer, making him an easy target- something that A.I anticipates and is already getting back-up plans up and running), he is spread out across the entire planet and is considerably harder to undermine or destroy.

Thoth
"Beware.
The mythical Thoth was concerned with
maintaining the balance
between creation and destruction,
yes and no,
light and darkness,
not the triumph of one over the other." - Durandal
Thoth is a highly advanced piece of 'machinery'. Being a Jjaro A.I, he was given to the S'pht'kr on Klia and was designed for a very simple purpose in mind: Make sure the W'rkncacnter never, ever escapes Lh'owon's star. This mission was kept alive in the S'pht culture, with an event known as the "Blood Tides of Lh'owon" proclaiming that nobody must ever go to the sun or mess with it.

Ever (And yes, I'm aware that's not really a big deal with the PC Tournament [Maybe...], but it's still something I need to bring up).

Thoth also seems to have an obsession with balance, as he assisted mankind when the Pfhor were utterly dominating them (teleporting away soldiers, setting ships to explode, coordinating attacks or leaking Pfhor strategies and commands, you get the idea), and than did the reverse when humanity started doing too good. This habit of his will continue, even with the Portal Master wreaking havoc with space-time (although knowing Thoth and Jjaro technology, Lh'owon might just 'flicker' in-between the dimension PM is holding them and it's actual location).

On a random note, he seems to speak only in oddly cryptic rhymes.

Faintly annoying.

Oh, he's also bonded with Durandal in an alternate universe-timeline-whatever.

The Security Officer (SecOff)

"
We've watched while the stars burned out, and creation played in reverse. The universe freezing in half light. Once I thought to escape. To end the end a master, step out of the path of collapse. Escape would make us God. Yet I cannot help remember one enigma. A hybrid, elusive destroyer. This is the only mystery I have not solved.[...]A man long dead, grafted to machines your builders did not understand. You follow the path, fitting into an infinite pattern. Yours to manipulate, to destroy and rebuild. Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all becomes one. One moment left. [...] I know who you are.

You are destiny."

- Durandal talking to the Security Officer (still alive via Jjaro implants) during the final nanonseconds before the Big Crunch
The Security Officer is our silent protagonist, a soldier of some kind that was some time in the past converted into a Battleroid- usually a dead corpse revived through excessive cybernetic modifications, with "Easy to manufacture chips enhanced the fragile human brain, and genetically enhanced muscles and titanium bones replaced the fragile human form". The Security Officer is one of these cyborgs (although some speculate he's in reality just an A.I inhabiting a robotic suit (as he seems to undergo the Three Stages of Rampancy- Melancholy, Anger and Jealousy), although there's also proof for him to be human. And no, we have no 100% concrete proof for either. Yes, that makes this rather aggravating.), having been brought aboard the Marathon by the UESC's president, Marcus Tiberius Buendia and than left aboard in stasis. The Pfhor at some point killed the other 9 Cyborgs, leaving only one left. And ever since than, he's been ordered about by A.I after A.I to go shoot stuff and be the perfect soldier- for better and worse.

Now, personality wise, it's time to copy-paste from the Wiki establish what I know from having played the Marathon series even though I only have the first one downloaded onto my iPad! And put it in a different font and give it a background color because... reasons.

...

Anyways!
The Cyborg's mind and personality are mostly left up to the player to speculate on. Although Durandal describes him as "a magnificent killing machine" and asks him if being allowed to kill more Pfhor will "make you happy," the AI is more likely being malicious than accurate. While the Cyborg does not seem to be a mindless psychopath, he is clearly comfortable enduring and quite capable of carrying out violent acts on a scale unimaginable to any normal person. However, in the third game of the series, he seems to lose any sense of morality he may previously have possessed, working for the indisputably evil Tycho and killing BOBS on Tycho's orders in a desperate attempt to keep the W'rkncacnter trapped in Lh'owon's sun. In Infinity, we are given greater access to his mind and feelings. He seems to recognize some sort of guilt or weariness for the atrocities he has committed, and appears to believe that he has been forced to do what he has done. Ironically, this seems accurate. All three games consist chiefly of doing what various people tell him to do - only once does he act of his own initiative, and this is in the Marathon manual, which is not an entirely reliable source.
So yeah, the Cyborg is always at the hands of others and has stood against entire armies of Pfhor and won- and he doesn't really like that he's been forced to do that. But if he has to, he will, and he will do it with ease. And now I wish the UNSC hadn't been fighting on Hoth, because I really wish the Security Officer would meet Master Chief.

Eh, who knows, maybe it'll happen in the future or something.

Speaking of future, due to the time-reality warping capabilities of the Jjaro, SecOff here has Jjaro implants along his cyborg enhancements. This gives him a capability of powers (ABle to use Jjaro technology, for example), as well as the ability to jump through dimensions and time, as well as making him essentially immortal (he was able to survive all the way to the Big Crunch, and possibly beyond).

So in other words, if given the access to, SecOff and Durandal might be able to fuck over Portal Master just a bit.

They've faced worse than him, and much stronger.

Robert Blake
Trust me, I'm not a Pfhor-lover, but with Durandal no longer pulling the strings a great weight has been lifted from our shoulders. We're planning to steal a Pfhor ship of our own and return to Earth.
You're invited to come with us when we do. - Robert Blake

Robert Blake left something for you a few minutes ago. He and the other humans captured a Pfhor refueling ship and found or forced someone to pilot it for them. They folded out of the system immediately after I received the message, without so much as a "Thanks for saving us from becoming plasma on Tau Ceti, Durandal."
Anyway, the message reads: "The dead walk again; we cannot wait. -Blake."

I think he means me, but I let him go anyway.- Durandal, just as the Pfhor use the trih xeem on Lh'owons' sun... To fucking terrifying results.
So yeah, Blake might have been dead serious on that 'the dead walk again' quote.
Robert Blake is in charge of the various humans on Lh'owon at the moment, and that's all I can really say about him. He doesn't really do much, except free the Security Officer from Pfhor capture at one point, and generally lead the human forces against the Pfhor. He's a rather competent commander, all things considered, but the Pfhor are just leagues ahead of mankind technologically. Not much else to say about him, really.

So there you have it: Lh'owon, homeworld of an alien race now enslaved by insectoid primates (did I forget to mention the Pfhor are insect-primates? Meh, whatever) who hold a small garrison here, an insane A.I that could become a God one day and his (somewhat forced) lackies (wait, am I talking about Durandal or Tycho?... Meh), a hidden clan of aliens with highly advanced technology who follow an A.I that is obsessed with balance and a Spawn of Azathoth inside this worlds' star but for the moment isn't really a factor in this... The second the planet returns to normal space though, oh, things will go out in a vaguely similar fashion to the games... Whatever the hell that might entail.

So yeah, there's Lh'owon. There is worse worlds, all things considered.

Doesn't make this world that much better.

Danger Status: 4/5 (5/5 for forces with heavy technological capabilities) And than it'll become a googolplex when the world returns to it's normal spot and the trih xeem is used.
